2011 has been both an encouraging and a desperate year for all captive marine mammals.
While two dolphins were saved from a tiny pool in Fethiye and taken for a rehabilitation programme, the walrus in Istanbul was left alone under imprisonment with her own destiny and kept on entertaining people with her bleeding wounds open after the Greater Municipality of Istanbul (İBB) issued a “healthy” report for her.
As we celebrated the big companies’ supports for our boycotts and the closure of Hisarönü, Bursa and Bodrum dolphinariums, the speedy preparation to open two other dolphinariums in Bodrum and Kaş just in two weeks’ time has accelerated our efforts to prevent them from opening forever.
2012 will be the year where we shall take bigger steps for the freedom of captive dolphins on a stronger legal basis.
We hope the New Year would bring freedom to all captive animals that belong in the wild and a greater empathy and awareness to humans.
